My weight gain happened over a period of about 20 years. I drove a school bus and was in and out of the house 3 times a day, usually snacking between each run. In the evening after dinner I continually had a diet soft drink at
my side. Snack cakes, chips, etc. were at my bed side every night. I achieved the weight of 317 pounds.
With retirement looming within a year, I was tired of being tired constantly and not having a lap to hold my
grandchildren on. My husband and I discussed retirement plans such as travel and a new boat to relax on; I knew something had to change.
Gastric By-Pass seemed to be my best option. After diet consultation, mental evaluations, and group discussions, I
decided to proceed with the surgery. After 2 nights in the hospital my life began to change for the better. The
weight started to melt away, along with problems with sleep apnea, high blood pressure, hot flashes, back pain, and
reflux disease.
I now have more energy than my husband can seem to keep up with. I can do things now I would have never thought I
could. Boating, snow ball fights with grandchildren, and keeping the house like I use to. Instead of sitting, I now
go to the gym 3 days a week, which would have been a dirty word before the surgery.
I now weigh 178 and my goal is 160. With the help of the surgery, support of my family, and the determination I
have, no doubt I will get there. Thanks to Dr. Sonnanstine and his staff for saving my life and quality of life.
