Dr. Tom Sonnanstine, Medical Director

The Bariatric Center at Georgetown Community Hospital

 

 

Dr. Thomas E. Sonnanstine, an internationally-known teacher of bariatric surgeons, begins his Directorship of the Bariatric Center at Georgetown Community Hospital April 1, 2009.  He comes to Georgetown from the northern Kentucky area, where he was the first board-certified surgeon fellowship-trained in minimally invasive advanced laparoscopic bariatric surgery. “We are pleased to be able to bring a surgeon of Dr. Sonnanstine’s considerable expertise to the Georgetown area,” said the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, Barry Papania.

 

 

Dr. Sonnanstine received his Bachelor of Arts undergraduate degree in Chemistry at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH and graduated cum laude.  He completed his 5-year General Surgery Residency at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.  Following completion of his residency, Dr. Sonnanstine elected to do a 1-year Fellowship in Advanced Laparoscopic/ Bariatric Surgery at Tufts/ New England Medical Center in Boston, MA.

 

 

 

While in Boston, Dr. Sonnanstine was under the mentorship of Dr. Scott Shikora, the current President of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, and one of the pioneers of laparoscopic bariatric surgery. Through his training and practice of bariatric surgery, Dr. Sonnanstine has performed nearly 1,500 Bariatric procedures.

 

 

Dr. Sonnanstine will perform RNY Gastric Bypass, Adjustable Gastric Banding, Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy and Revision Surgery. He is committed to a multi-disciplinary approach to bariatric surgery with intensive pre-operative education and close, life-long follow-up of the patient directly by the bariatric surgeon.
