G. Derek Weiss, MD, FACS, FASMBS

• Board-certified General surgeon since 1995
Our Bariatric Surgical Medical Director, Dr. Weiss, is a Louisville native and a board-certified general surgeon and certified Center of Excellence Bariatric Surgeon who has been in practice since 1994. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Ivy League Dartmouth College where he majored in Biochemistry. He graduated Cum Laude from The University of Louisville School of Medicine, finishing in the top 10% of his class and was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He did his surgical training /residency at Emory University in Atlanta, where he worked under Dr. John Hunter, a renowned leader in advanced laparoscopy and previous President of the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES).
John S. Oldham, Jr., MD, FACS, FASMBS
• Center of Excellence Certified Bariatric Surgeon
• Board-certified General Surgeon since 2005
Dr. Oldham is an Owensboro native and board-certified general surgeon and Certified Center of Excellence Bariatric Surgeon who has been in practice since 2000. He got his bachelor’s degree from Southern Methodist University and his medical degree from The University of Louisville School of Medicine. He did his General Surgery training at Wright State University in Dayton, OH.
Drs. Weiss and Oldham founded Bluegrass Bariatric Surgical Associates at Georgetown Community Hospital in 2003, and performed the thousands of minimally invasive surgeries that led to Georgetown Community Hospital’s original Center of Excellence Designation. Their practice is devoted entirely to minimally invasive bariatric surgery.

Approximately 2500 Roux-en-Y gastric bypasses, 3500 LapBand®s, 100’s of Sleeves, and the first and only surgeons in the state offering LGCP.

• Laparoscopic Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy
• Laparoscopic LapBand® (only surgeons at GCH offering LapBand®)

• Laparoscopic Greater Curvature Plication (Only surgeons at GCH offering LGCP)
Call Coverage:
• Dr. Weiss or Dr. Oldham (the only group at Georgetown with full time bariatric call coverage)
• Please Note: Drs. Weiss and Oldham do not cover any other practice’s patients at Georgetown.
